Technically, if you just let the hero loop around, slimes will continually spawn and the hero will keep fighting. The hero starts all loops and there are a few slimes scattered about the road. By paving the way for a hero victory, you also win in the grand scheme of things. You want the hero to win but instead of going into fight after fight and defeating the monsters, you are setting the stage for every single fight. In fact, your role is more akin to a dungeon master in a D & D game than anything else. This is all about synergy and not creating the unbeatable hand that decimates your foe. This is not your standard deck builder though so no need to worry about that perfect hand. In the beginning, you can only use a combination of 12 cards (that cap goes up the further you progress). Before embarking on an expedition, the available card deck can be viewed and customized. The player’s role in the game is controlling how the world is built on the map. Magic may help the necromancer but it has no use to the warrior and a rogue will want more evasion than the warrior who can take more of a beating. Since you do not control the hero directly, gear largely acts as stat sticks. The warrior, the starter hero, has access to a weapon, a ring, a shield, and armor while the rogue ditches the shield for a second weapon and the necromancer adds another ring and a necklace.

Each of the three heroes does have limitations though. The more you loop, the harder the game becomes.Īs loot is won in combat, the hero becomes stronger. There is no input from the player as combat is completely automated.Īfter emerging victorious, you either earn new loot, world cards to use on the map, resources for your camp, or absolutely nothing. Enemies spawn on various titles and upon entering combat, the hero fights. The game begins with a warrior, one of the three titular heroes, walking around a randomly generated, misshapen square/rectangle. You the player are in control of the world. It takes the best of several and just destroys the mold. Huh? Look, Loop Hero really does not fit into any one or two genres. Hopefully, this review does it or I will be looping back to the drawing board (I am not sorry for any of these).ĭeveloped by Four Quarters and published by Devolver Digital, Loop Hero is an endless RPG, deck builder, worldbuilder, roguelite that takes place at the end of the world. I cannot tell if it is because I am trying to avoid story spoilers or the gameplay is such that I cannot compare it to other games, but this is a game I want to sell to everyone but cannot find the words to do so. I am going to just jump right to the end of this review before I LOOP back to the beginning: Loop Hero is the best game that I cannot accurately describe to proper justice.
